What if life came with a report card?

As children head back to school, many families are thinking about report cards, grades, and helping their students succeed. It’s a season filled with fresh starts and new goals.

But it also invites us to ask different questions.

If your life were graded today, what would your report card look like?

Not by how much money you’ve earned or how many hours you’ve worked, but by the things that truly matter.

At Heart & Soul Hospice, we have the privilege of hearing stories that remind us what people value most as they reflect on their lives. Those conversations rarely center on promotions, possessions, or packed schedules. Instead, they focus on family, friendships, faith, forgiveness, and the memories made along the way.

If life had subjects, perhaps they would look like this:

Love – Did you tell the people closest to you how much they meant to you?

Kindness – Did you leave people better than you found them?

Family – Did you make time for those who mattered most?

Gratitude – Did you appreciate the ordinary moments that became extraordinary memories?

Purpose – Did you use your gifts to make a difference in someone else’s life?

The beautiful thing about life’s report card is that it isn’t final until our journey is complete. Every day offers another opportunity to improve our grade—to make the phone call, mend a relationship, create a memory, or simply sit with someone who needs your time.

This is one of the greatest lessons hospice teaches.

Hospice isn’t about giving up. It’s about helping people focus on living well, finding comfort, and spending meaningful time with the people they love. It reminds us that the most valuable moments often aren’t the big milestones, they’re the quiet conversations on the porch, the laughter around the dinner table, the stories shared with grandchildren, and the hands held during life’s most important moments.

As another school year begins, maybe we should all take a moment to look at our own report card.

Not to judge ourselves, but to ask:

Am I spending my time on the things that will matter most years from now?

Because in the end, the highest honors in life aren’t earned through achievements alone. They’re earned through compassion, generosity, relationships, and the love we leave behind.

At Heart & Soul Hospice, we’re honored to walk alongside families as they create meaningful moments together. Our hope is that every person has the opportunity to write a story—and earn a report card—they can look back on with peace, gratitude, and love.
